Do I have to install SourceAnywhere Server on the SQL Server machine?

No. SourceAnywhere Server can be installed on a different machine to the one hosting SQL Server. However, for better performance, we recommend you to install the SourceAnywhere Server on the SQL Server machine that hosts the 'SourceAnywhere' database.
